CUNY Queens College Hillel

This project involved a gut renovation of Hillel at Queens College, a student group center located within the Student Union building on the campus in Flushing, New York, The goal of QC Hillel was to modernize the center in order to provide the appropriate spaces to accommodate their many programs and diverse
student population in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Queens College is part of the City University of New York.

To increase the overall usable area, existing storage closets were opened up and added to program space, all of which was made flexible to accommodate multiple uses. Offices were relocated so the space's only windows could be incorporated into the main program areas, allowing natural light to filter throughout the
entire center and thereby eliminate the dark, closed-in feel of the original configuration. An aggressive construction schedule was established and kept, and the budget was maintained by reusing many of the existing systems, being creative with funding sources, and selecting building materials and finishes for their cost, durability, and aesthetics.
